‘Mauritania_abuelo’ is a journey of the heart, born from a seven-month odyssey across Europe and a spontaneous detour to Mauritania. Set against the vast desert, it symbolises my unexpected adventure and the solitude that provided profound insight. In the silent embrace of the Sahara, I felt the weight of my family’s sacrifices and the fleeting beauty of life’s moments. A poem from my late grandfather, shared during our final encounter in Colombia, resonated with me. Written in Spanish, it reads:
I met you to lose you, friend.
I met you to cry for you, I.
I met you to mourn my life.
I met you to say goodbye.
His words, inscribed on the artwork’s borders, honour my family’s sacrifices, illuminating how their struggles granted me the freedoms I cherish today.
