My drawing process is a way to reflect on significant moments in my life, like a diary entry. Each piece captures a memory or thought. Growing up in Australia, I’ve always felt a strong connection to my Colombian roots, especially my bond with my grandfather. He shared a poem comparing society to a turbulent ocean that can overwhelm the unaware, stressing the need to stay alert and conscious to avoid being swept away by its powerful currents.
In “Vivid Despiertos”, I aimed to visually represent this message. The grid in the sky symbolises society, like a map guiding us through life. At the centre, a silhouette with one eye wide open is separated from a stormy ocean. The grainy box reflects the poem's metaphor: though our struggles are individual, we can feel lost at sea. This piece serves as a reminder to remain aware of our surroundings, as we can easily be swept away by society’s currents. Live awake.
